The Christmas Card Town

Elkhorn has been called the Christmas Card Town since before World War II, and the name comes from a specific chain of events rather than a slogan.

The park around the County Government Center was where families gathered to see soldiers off during the war. It later became the setting for the city's Christmas decorations. In the 1950s, artist Cecil Johnson produced a series of watercolor paintings of Elkhorn for Ford Motor Company, which were turned into Christmas cards and mailed by the thousands.

The tradition continued through local artist Jan Castle Reed, who completed a series of 15 oil paintings in 2011, and then T. James Carson, who took over in 2012 beginning with a rendition of the 1887 Building. The original paintings are on display at Elkhorn City Hall and the Matheson Memorial Library. The Elkhorn Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the program and keeps the collection of past cards, along with commemorative Christmas ornaments the Kiwanis Club has produced since 1991.

Cards and ornaments are sold at the Chamber, the library and several downtown businesses each holiday season.

The Walworth County Fair

Elkhorn became the home of the Walworth County Fair in 1851. It is the largest county fair in Wisconsin, runs 6 days ending on Labor Day, and draws over 100,000 visitors. For a resident it is effectively a hometown event, and fair week is the busiest of the year in the city.

The fairgrounds run year-round, not just fair week. The Walworth County Fairgrounds at 411 E Court Street, (262) 723-3228, operate as a live music and event venue with an on-site campground. Recurring programming includes the Elkhorn Antique Flea Market, one of the larger flea markets in the upper Midwest, held several times a season; Ribfest; monster truck shows; and a calendar of consumer shows, swap meets and private events.

Dates change annually, so check the Fairgrounds schedule. For a resident, the practical effect is that a large event venue sits inside the city and generates traffic on specific weekends throughout the year.

Schools and education

The Elkhorn Area School District administers from 3 N Jackson Street, (262) 723-3160. District schools include Jackson Elementary, West Side Elementary at 222 Sunset Drive, Tibbets Elementary, Elkhorn Area Middle School, Elkhorn Area High School and Elkhorn Options Virtual School.

Boundaries do not follow the mailing address. The district serves the City of Elkhorn and portions of the surrounding towns, and neighboring districts include Delavan-Darien, Lake Geneva-Genoa City and Whitewater. Verify the assignment for a specific parcel with the district office before you commit.

Wisconsin open enrollment. Any Wisconsin resident in 4K through grade 12 may apply to attend a public school district other than the one they live in. The regular application period runs February 2 through April 30 at 4 p.m. for the following school year, and late applications are not accepted. Both the resident and nonresident districts may deny an application for reasons set in state law, and a denial can be appealed to the Department of Public Instruction within 30 days. Transportation to a nonresident district is generally the parent's responsibility. Applications go to the nonresident district, not to DPI. Gateway Technical College operates an Elkhorn campus. University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is about 20 minutes northwest.

Matheson Memorial Library

The Matheson Memorial Library at 101 N Wisconsin Street, (262) 723-2678, is a Neoclassical and Beaux Arts building listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.

Library service in Elkhorn began September 2, 1901 as the Charles Edward Sprague Library on the second floor of the Sprague Opera House, with about 1,000 volumes. The Matheson building opened in 1931. A 4,500 square foot addition followed in 1990, and a 14,000 square foot addition in 2004 added library space and the Elkhorn Community Center.

The collection runs roughly 70,000 items, with access to more than a million additional titles through the shared catalog. There are technology labs, a youth services department with a castle story hour room, and a rentable Community Room with a kitchen, projector and sound system.

Hours are Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Parks and recreation

Sunset Park

Sunset Park at 200 Devendorf Street is the center of city recreation. It holds 4 baseball fields, 2 basketball courts, 2 playgrounds, open grass fields, the Lions Den Pavilion, and 2 large hills that residents sled in winter. The park is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Sunset Pool at 320 Devendorf Street is the municipal outdoor pool inside the park, with a splash pad, a diving board and a concession stand. In season it opens daily at 11 a.m., running to 6 p.m. most days and 8 p.m. Fridays.

The Elkhorn Recreation Center operates from 200 Devendorf Street in the park, (262) 741-5114. The Parks and Recreation Department runs youth sports leagues, swim lessons, day camps and seasonal programming. Offerings change annually, so call for the current season.

The Elkhorn Band Shell

The Elkhorn Band Shell in Sunset Park is on the National Register of Historic Places and turned 100 years old in 2026.

It was built in 1926 by Jake Bauerman for $5,000 in Classical Revival style, to house the Holton-Elkhorn Band after the Frank Holton Company, a brass instrument manufacturer, moved to Elkhorn in 1918. The design was adapted from a shell in Mount Morris, Illinois. Roughly 4,000 people attended the opening concert. The structure originally stood on the courthouse square and was moved to Sunset Park in 1962 and 1963. It was added to the National Register in 2012.

Programming runs on 2 tracks:

The Holton-Elkhorn Band plays 6 free Friday evening concerts at 7:30 p.m., beginning the third Friday in June and running 6 weeks, plus a Christmas concert in December. The band is funded by the Holton Foundation and the City of Elkhorn. The July 3 concert is the Star-Spangled Spectacular, paired with city fireworks.

The Sounds of Sunset Summer Concert Series has run free family concerts at the band shell since 2021, often with a food truck on site.

For the 100th anniversary season the city expanded programming beyond the concert series, adding a free hands-on family vehicle event and outdoor cover-band performances. Golf

Golf is a year-round community function in Elkhorn rather than a seasonal amenity.

Evergreen Golf Club at N6246 US Highway 12, (262) 741-6200, sits about 2 miles north of the city at the Highway 12 and 67 intersection. Established in 1973, it is a 27-hole public facility running 3 nine-hole courses, the North, South and East, with water in play on 15 of the 27 holes. The clubhouse is Prairie design.

The Evergreen Room is a banquet and wedding facility, the Pavilion is a heated or open outdoor space seating up to 200, and the Bunker Grill and Bar and the Pub serve daily. Lauderdale Lakes Country Club at N7498 Country Club Drive, (262) 742-2454, is a 9-hole regulation course dating to a 1921 design, north of the city on the Lauderdale chain, with small greens, natural hills and lake views.

Alpine Valley Resort at W2501 County Road D carries an Elkhorn mailing address but sits northeast toward East Troy. It runs lift-served downhill skiing and a ski school in winter, golf in summer, and operates year-round as a hotel, restaurant and wedding and event venue.

Delbrook Golf Club in Delavan and Majestic Oaks at Lake Lawn are each about 5 to 10 minutes southwest. The Kettle Moraine State Forest, Southern Unit begins in the Town of La Grange, about 10 minutes northwest of Elkhorn. It is the largest block of public land in the region, with hiking, mountain biking, cross-country ski trails, horse trails and segments of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Whitewater Lake and Rice Lake sit inside the forest with a state beach, launches and a campground.

The downtown runs along Wisconsin Street around the County Government Center park.

Coffee. Friends Coffee Company at 11 N Wisconsin Street opens at 6:30 a.m. weekdays and carries a gift shop, ice cream and bakery alongside the coffee. The Counter at 21 S Wisconsin Street is open weekdays 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Madrez Cafe at 1560 N Country Club Parkway is open daily 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Downtown dining. Moy's Asian Cuisine at 3 N Wisconsin Street is a long-standing family-owned fixture on the downtown block, serving Chinese, Japanese and sushi, closed Mondays. Station 20 Pub 'N Grub at 20 S Wisconsin Street is a firehouse-themed pub open daily. Greatest Hits Social Tap at 39 N Wisconsin Street operates in the lower level of the Old Time Mall with live music. Backyard @ Friends at 41 N Wisconsin Street is a seasonal beer garden. Happy Times Pub at 10 W Evergreen Parkway is on the north side of the city.

Groceries: Hansen's IGA Market at 58 W Market Street, open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, is the full grocery in the city. Larger format grocery runs to Delavan or Lake Geneva.

Pharmacy: Walgreens at 939 N Wisconsin Street, and Aurora Pharmacy at the medical center and at 201 E Morrissy Drive.

Hardware: Jackson's Do it Best Hardware at 635 N Wisconsin Street. Fleet Farm, Lowe's, Tractor Supply and Harbor Freight are all in Delavan, about 5 minutes southwest.
